Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit site for education that investigates gender representation in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes of women as they are portrayed in popular media. Furthermore she aims to create awareness of online harassment directed at women and those who are marginalized. Holding a master's degree in social and political thought at York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public presenter and has presented speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements at a young stage of her life. In 2009, while still studying at university she launched the Feminist Frequency web site. An ambitious woman who wanted to launch a web-series that would examine the gender-based representation in video games, she was targeted by an online campaign. The incident did not deter her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her determination as feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the feminist field were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
